Key Projects & Achievements
I created and now sell the Simple Tools Phone Directory - which increases company's profits by cutting down the time people spend looking up internal phone numbers and increasing people’s productivity. You can see and purchase a version at http://webgeneration.com.au
I provide training and advice in creating and managing DotNetNuke websites and in optimising web sites.
Sites I have assisted include: http://ourcountrybook.com , http://www.yourfamilyvision.com and http://metalemporium.com.au .
More information can be found at http://www.webgeneration.com.au/BuildYourbrnbspnbspnbspOwnWebsite/tabid/69/Default.aspx
I created a booking system to facilitate the online booking of cars, rooms, interpreters and equipment for ISCHS. The application saved reclaimed over 102 hours of otherwise wasted time each week across the organisation.
I created the ISCHS internet site - http://www.ischs.org.au – including writing the content, creating the graphic design, creating and coding the structure using DotNetNuke. Since its launch the number of hits on the website has increased by over 500%.
I created a web-based internal phone directory. This tool saves ISCHS over $100,000 every year by converting time that was being wasted in looking up phone numbers into productive time. A version of the Phone Directory can be purchased from my company at http://www.webgeneration.com.au
I created a web-based in/out board which allowed staff to indicate whether they were in or out the building and the time they would return. By simplifying the processes and integrating the board with the Phone Directory productivity across the organisation was increased.
I created a web-based services directory to promote and display the services the Community Health Centre offer. In my application, every department can update and display their own services in a variety of formats. I have integrated the services directory into the ISCHS website and it can be seen at http://www.ischs.org.au
To address the issue of LOTE clients being illiterate in their own languages, I am working with senior practitioner to create a DVD describing ISCHS’ services in various languages such as Russian, Polish and Indigenous pidgin. My role consists of project management and organising the creation of the DVD.
I increased the computer skills across the organisation by over 20% - based on a questionnaire - through creating and carrying out presentations, one-on-one training, quizzes, documents, question and answer sessions and online movies.
A screen shot of the help-desk training material I created – together with number of views – can be seen at http://davidrcollett.com/download/helpdesk.gif .
I created and maintain the online community Deep Thought at http://deepthought.davidrcollett.com. Currently it receives about 1000 hits per day and earns approximate $400 a year.
I worked with Campbell Mattinson, a wine reviewer, to convert his existing pdf newsletter with 800 subscribers into a user-pays online magazine. We progressed through the requirements gathering phase and I presented several possible solutions to him.
I worked with AA Blinds and Security Doors and their web development company (localbluepages) to produce a website for AA Blinds. So far, this has involved providing the leadership and guidance to both parties to get things moving. I also developed an online e-commerce website through which AA Blinds will be able to sell plantation shutters.
I created a basic website and internet strategy for Inform Invest to give them a presence on the internet and a path forward.
Working with a colleague from seek.com, I produced the graphic design and initial architecture and code for a site which allowed people to find and give recommendations on tradespeople.
Working with another developer, we designed, estimated and implemented a solution to allow the seek.com cookie to be persisted across all of the seek domains. I also designed and estimated the redevelopment of the seek.com myseek area in .NET
As an individual I recoded the seek.com organisation profiles in .Net. This involved requirements gathering, designing and implementing the solution and supporting the project through testing.
Working as a developer on the JobMail project - a rewrite of the job search email application in .Net - I wrote C# code, nUnits, captured requirements from a developer perspective to assist the BA and ensured the applications compliance with RFC 2822.
When the above JobMail project was running late due to the time it would have taken to test the project, I volunteered to create two tools to enhance the rate at which the testers could test it. I developed two C# applications (Speedy Tester and Speedy Ad Converter) which saved 8 weeks of test time on the 4 month project and brought the project in on time.
I led a team of 2 people in developing the presentation layer of seek.com’s jobsearch and home pages in ASP.Net. My role involved leading the team, managing change requests, designing and developing user controls and working with back-end developers to ensure their classes exposed the necessary functionality. I was awarded a $1000 bonus for my work as team lead.
Working as a developer in the Linking Out project, I designed and implemented the presentation layer structure of the jobseeker side of the seek sites, developed the user controls for the newly built pages, constructed the bridge between the old jobsearch pages and the new job apply pages, built a three state login box in javascript and DHTML, and deployed the project. My parts of the project were delivered on time, had an 80% “first time through test” pass rate in testing and cut the length of the following project by 2 months.
I led the Alliance Top Bar project - a project which allowed site alliances to be set up on the seek.com site. This task involved writing the proposal with estimates to Business Development, designing and coding the solution and leading a developer. I delivered the project on time and with an 82% “first time through test” pass rate. I made the site alliances configurable and taught the IDG team how to configure these alliances using an xml file.
I devised a method to speed up seek.com's deployment tool, which when implemented, cut the time of every production and test deployment by over 50%.
I worked as a developer on the Healthcare project - a project that created a healthcare job search and jobmail. Before I came on to this business critical project, it was falling behind schedule. When placed on this team, I saw that we would not make our deadlines with our current solution. I devised an alternate solution, lobbied for its implementation and obtained the extra resources necessary to complete the project. Once the main Healthcare site had been deployed, I built and deployed the remaining cobrand and NZ Healthcare sites. On my performance appraisal that year, my team lead wrote, "In fact, I think Dave was almost the sole reasons that Healthcare and Healthcare NZ were deployed on time."

Working as the Build Manager/Deployment Manager, I configured computers, managed builds, developed processes and deployed the Unified Client Centre - the seek.com advertiser centre recoded into .Net. For this achievement, I wrote and executed a 4-stage deployment plan which involved the DBAs, Network Engineers, Project Managers, Developers, Testers, the Architect and Product team. The CIO said of my UCC deployment, that "I had raised the benchmark for the role of the deployment manager."
Working as the presentation layer developer, I wrote the presentation layer of seek.com site in ASP.Net. This involved collaborating with the Architect and Developers to develop user and custom controls, writing the front end ASP.NET code, writing the javascript library, “bodging” the old ASP parts of the site to make them look like the new code, and configuring the newly built framework.
I mentored two User Interface designers in software development, OO principles, C# and ASP.Net. In mentoring, I focused on not only improving their coding skills, but also in improving their problem solving skills and customer relationship skills.
I produced seek.com co-branded sites for Yahoo, Optus Communications, Telstra, NineMSN and XtraMSN. These involved recoding the seek.com site to alter its appearance. After becoming known as the “cobrand man”, I wrote extensive documentation which allowed others to create these sites without assistance.
I ran (with another person) seek.com's internal HTML training course in which I taught non-programmers how to write HTML. This course, the HR Manager said "received rave reviews."
As part of seek.com's culture team, I organised a treasure hunt around the St Kilda area which involved the whole company. I also created and managed the seek.com Running group, including organising a running trainer to coach the group over a twelve week period.
I developed the seek.com intranet from layouts provided by the designer using a combination of HTML, Javascript and ASP.
Working with HR and Customer Service, I produced applications to improve seek.com's internal processes including a database-driven leave application system, a database-driven tile booking system, and email-driven production request forms.
I created a sitemap application for the seek.com site, using Perl, ASP, HTML and Visio, which aided the developers in understanding the site architecture.
I created Advertising Energy's internal Intranet pages. I also created a viewing gallery of Advertising Energy's folio pieces for their Internet pages using HTML and Javascript.
I reduced the time taken to create an employment advertisement by several orders of magnitude by implementing dynamic templates (developed by the IT Manager) to automate the process of re-sizing advertisements. This improvement saved about 1 days work a week.
I saved considerable costs by introducing a process to archive and back up recruitment advertisements to a recordable CD, allowing old jobs to be removed from the system, eliminating the need to acquire additional hard drives and zip disks.
I created a site to provide Network Recruitment with an online presence. This involved writing the proposal, pricing the assignment, designing the site, coding the HTML, sourcing photos, organising the domain name and the web space.
